Kundali matching & Guna Milan explained

Kundali matching (Guna Milan) compares two birth charts to gauge marital compatibility. The best-known method is Ashtakoot — "eight factors" — which scores a couple out of 36 points across eight dimensions of harmony, from values and temperament to health and progeny. Alongside the score, an astrologer checks for doshas (like Manglik or Nadi dosha) and their classical exceptions.

How the 36-point score is read

The eight kootas together add up to 36. As a rough guide: 18+ is considered an acceptable match, 24–32 is very good, and above 32 excellent. A low score is not an automatic "no" — a single strong factor, a cancelled dosha, or supportive divisional charts can outweigh a modest total. Guna Milan is one important signal, not the whole verdict.

Manglik & Nadi dosha

Manglik (Mangal) dosha arises when Mars sits in certain houses and is said to add friction to married life — but it is greatly reduced when both partners are Manglik, when Mars is strong, or with age. Nadi dosha (same Nadi group) is the highest-weighted koota, yet it carries well-known exceptions that nullify it. A good report always checks these cancellations before raising a concern.

Beyond the score

Serious matchmaking looks past the number: the 7th house and its lord (marriage), the Navamsa (D9) chart, the couple’s running Dasha periods, and Graha Maitri (the mental compatibility of the two Moon-sign lords). Our report surfaces all of these so families can make an informed, unhurried decision.

The eight kootas of Ashtakoot

#KootaPointsMeaning
1Varna1Spiritual compatibility and ego balance — the working harmony of the two natures.
2Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence — how naturally the partners draw and defer to each other.
3Tara3Health, wellbeing and destiny — the auspiciousness of the birth-star pairing.
4Yoni4Physical and intimate compatibility, based on the nakshatra animal symbols.
5Graha Maitri5Mental and emotional friendship through the two Moon-sign lords.
6Gana6Temperament match — Deva, Manava or Rakshasa nature and how they blend.
7Bhakoot7Household and financial harmony, from the Moon-sign relationship.
8Nadi8Health of progeny and genetic compatibility — the highest-weighted factor.

Guna Milan is a time-honoured guide, not a substitute for the couple’s own understanding. A qualified astrologer weighs the full picture — score, doshas, and divisional charts — together.

About Kundali matching

Is Kundali matching mandatory?
No. It is shown as helpful guidance, never a barrier. You decide how much weight it carries.
Which system do you use?
Sidereal (Lahiri ayanamsa) with Ashtakoot/Guna Milan per classical BPHS rules.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
A chart still generates, but time-sensitive details (Lagna, Dasha) are most accurate with an exact birth time.
